Moderator in Limburg who connects people and ideas
A successful event isn’t just about what’s on the programme. What really matters is what people take away at the end of the day.
As a moderator, I bring structure, depth and connection. I ask the questions that need to be asked, keep the conversation focused and make sure both speakers and audience become part of the discussion.
I’m Bas van der Zwaan. Presenter, interviewer and programme maker with more than thirty years of experience in radio, television and live conversations. I use that experience to get to the heart of a subject quickly, without making an event feel heavy or overly formal.
A moderator makes sure the conversation actually goes somewhere
A programme can be strong on paper and still fail to reach its full potential.
Speakers each tell their own story, a panel discussion stays on the surface or the audience receives plenty of information but too little context to connect it all.
That’s where I see the role of a moderator.
I connect the different parts of the programme, ask questions that take the conversation further and make sure important insights don’t get lost. At the same time, I keep an eye on timing and remain alert to what is happening in the room.
It’s not just about following the running order. It’s about understanding what the event needs to achieve.
• MODERATOR LIMBURG
Well prepared, sharp in the moment
For me, a good question begins long before the event itself.
I want to understand the subject, who will be speaking, who will be in the room and what the client ultimately wants to achieve. That preparation helps me identify where greater depth is needed and which questions can move the conversation forward.
During the event, I genuinely listen to the answers.
Because the most interesting conversations often don’t come from simply asking the next question on your list. They come from following up on something someone has just said.
After decades of interviewing people, that way of working has become second nature to me.

What kinds of events can you book me for?
Conferences and symposia
At a conference or symposium, I bring speakers and topics together to create a cohesive programme. I keep the main thread on track, ask questions and make sure the audience understands how the different contributions fit together.
Panel discussions and interviews
A good panel takes more than a few people with microphones. I give it direction, ask probing questions and make room for different perspectives without letting the conversation go off track.
Business events
From an internal strategy day to an event for customers or business partners. I make complex content accessible and create space for questions, insights and interaction.
Government and non-profit organisations
Social issues often involve a range of interests and perspectives. I create an open discussion where participants are heard, while keeping the event’s purpose and timeframe in focus.
• WHAT I STAND FOR
What you can expect from me as your moderator
Well-prepared on the subject
Beforehand, I familiarise myself with the topic, the speakers and the audience. That helps me respond with insight rather than fall back on standard questions.
Sharp, yet human
Asking follow-up questions is part of my job. I may be probing, but always respectfully and without turning the conversation into an interrogation.
An eye for the whole room
An event isn’t just about the people on stage. Where possible, I involve the audience too, and sense when a subject needs more explanation, a lighter touch or greater depth.
Calm and clarity
Programmes change, and conversations are never entirely predictable. I keep an overview, manage the timing and make sure the event continues to flow naturally, even when the unexpected happens.

Moderator or event presenter?
The roles are closely related, but the emphasis is different.
An event presenter primarily guides the audience through the programme. They create the right atmosphere, provide smooth transitions, bring energy and maintain a connection with the audience.
As a moderator, I take a more active role in the content. I lead interviews and panel discussions, ask questions that go deeper, summarise key insights and keep the event focused on what it is meant to achieve.
Are you organising a conference, symposium, knowledge session or another event where conversation and content are at the heart of the programme?
Then a moderator is probably what you’re looking for.
Not sure which role is right? We’ll work that out together when we meet.
1. Getting to know each other
We’ll discuss the topic, objective, programme, audience and what the event ultimately needs to achieve.
2. Gathering content
I receive background information about the organisation, themes and speakers, and familiarise myself with the content.
3. Prepare and coordinate
We’ll go through the programme and decide together where interviews, audience interaction or extra depth would be useful.
4. The day itself
I oversee the programme, connect the different parts and keep discussions focused and engaging.

I’d be happy to hear about it.
Tell me what the event is about, who will be there and what you want participants to take away at the end of the day.
